Brief Discussion On The Principle And Use Method Of Laser Distance Meter

Laser rangefinder is an instrument that uses laser to accurately measure the distance to a target. The laser rangefinder emits a very thin laser beam towards the target during operation, and the reflected laser beam is received by the photoelectric element. The timer measures the time from emission to reception of the laser beam and calculates the distance from the observer to the target. Laser rangefinder is lightweight, small in size, easy to operate, fast and accurate, with an error of only one-fifth to one hundredth of other optical rangefinders.

If the laser is continuously emitted, the measuring range can reach about 40 kilometers and it can operate day and night. If the laser is pulsed, the absolute accuracy is generally low, but when used for long-distance measurements, it can achieve good relative accuracy.
Laser is a new technology developed in the 1960s. It is a light with pure color, highly concentrated energy, and good directionality. Laser rangefinder is an instrument that uses lasers for distance measurement. Its working principle is simple: distance is determined by measuring the time from the start of laser emission to the time when the laser is reflected back from the target. For example, using a laser rangefinder to measure the distance to the moon, if the time from the start of the laser emission to its reflection back from the moon is measured as 2.56 seconds, the one-way time from the laser emission to the moon is equal to 1.28 seconds, and the speed of the laser is the speed of light, which is equal to 300000 kilometers per second. Therefore, the measured distance between the moon and the earth is the product of one-way time and the speed of light, which is 384000 kilometers. In order to emit and receive laser and perform timing, a laser rangefinder consists of a laser transmitter, receiver, clock oscillator, and distance counter.

Laser rangefinders can also be used for tracking and ranging artificial satellites, measuring aircraft flight altitude, aiming and ranging targets, as well as conducting terrain mapping, surveys, and more.
