Does the sensor of a portable carbon monoxide detector need to be replaced regularly?

1, Sensor lifespan - natural aging is the core factor

Portable carbon monoxide detectors commonly use electrochemical sensors, and the electrolyte inside these sensors will slowly consume over time. Even if they are not in use, natural aging will gradually occur. The lifespan of sensors of different specifications varies, and the effective service life of conventional electrochemical sensors has a fixed range. Beyond this range, the sensitivity of the sensor will significantly decrease, making it difficult to accurately capture changes in carbon monoxide concentration. In this case, replacement needs to be considered.

2, Usage scenario - Accelerate or delay sensor loss

The frequency of use and environmental conditions will directly affect the lifespan of the sensor. If the portable carbon monoxide detector is used for a long time in high concentration carbon monoxide environments, high temperature and high humidity environments, or places with corrosive gases such as sulfides, it will accelerate the sensor loss rate, leading to a shortened effective life and may need to be replaced in advance. However, with low usage frequency and a dry and clean storage environment, the actual usage cycle of the sensor is likely to approach or even slightly exceed the nominal range.

3, Replacement judgment - calibration results are important basis

In addition to referencing the usage cycle, regular calibration can more accurately determine whether the sensor needs to be replaced. In daily use, the portable carbon monoxide detector should be calibrated regularly. If the response value deviation of the sensor to the standard concentration of carbon monoxide gas exceeds the reasonable range and cannot be restored after routine debugging, it indicates that the sensor has shown signs of failure and needs to be replaced in a timely manner. If the failed sensor continues to be used, the detection data will be distorted and unable to play a safety protection role.
