A laser rangefinder's difference from an ultrasonic rangefinder

The basic idea behind ultrasonic distance measurement is to use the air's known ultrasonic wave propagation speed to time how long it takes sound waves to hit obstacles and bounce back after being emitted, then use that information to determine the actual distance between the emission point and the obstacle. A counting and displaying circuit, an ultrasonic receiving and amplifying circuit, and an ultrasonic generating circuit make up the ultrasonic range finder.

The laser range finder is a device that uses laser to precisely calculate the target's distance. The photoelectric element detects the laser beam reflected by the target when the laser range finder is operating. The laser range finder produces a very thin laser beam to the target. The distance between the observer and the target is calculated by the timer by timing the launch and receipt of the laser beam.

The difference between ultrasonic range finder and laser range finder

1. The ultrasonic rangefinder's measurement accuracy is at the centimeter level, whereas the laser rangefinder's measurement accuracy is at the millimeter level;

2. In terms of measurement range, a handheld laser rangefinder may measure up to 200 meters away, while a laser rangefinder telescope can measure hundreds of kilometers away. The measurement range of an ultrasonic rangefinder is typically within 80 meters. Even more distant (the measurement accuracy of laser ranging telescopes is usually 1 meter or tens of centimeters).

3. Errors in the ultrasonic range finder are simple to report. Since the ultrasonic range finder generates sound waves and has the fan-shaped emission characteristics of sound waves, there will be more reflected sound waves, more interference, and more error reporting when there are many obstructions in the path of the sound waves. Since the laser rangefinder uses a very narrow laser beam that is both sent out and returned, there is essentially no interference as long as the beam can pass through.

4. The cost of a laser rangefinder is between a few hundred and several thousand or even tens of thousands of yuan, whereas the cost of an ultrasonic rangefinder is between a few tens and several hundred yuan. Depending on the accuracy and distance, there are significant variances.
