A refractometer is an instrument that uses light to measure the concentration of a liquid

A refractometer is a measuring instrument that reflects the speed of light. The measurement does not directly reveal the speed of light, but is directly related to the speed of light in air, and this close relationship is called the refractive index. So if a substance has a refractive index of 1.5, it means that the speed of light travels through air about 50% faster than it travels through that substance.

A refractometer, also known as a refractometer, is an instrument that uses light to test the concentration of a liquid, and is used to measure the refractive index, birefringence, and optical properties. Refractometers can be divided into handheld refractometers, sugar refractometers, honey refractometers, gemstone refractometers, digital display refractometers, automatic refractometers and online refractometers.

Refractive index is a physical property of matter. It is a commonly used process control index in food production. Measuring the refractive index of liquid food by refractometer can identify the composition of food, determine the concentration of food, and judge the purity and quality of food.

The refractive index is closely related to the properties of the material itself. The factors that determine it are temperature and wavelength (commonly known as color). Therefore, when using a refractometer to detect the concentration of a substance, it is necessary to first determine the temperature and wavelength. At the same time, different substances will have the same refractive index at different concentrations. Therefore, the concentration measurement can only be performed routinely in binary mixtures (the mixture of only two substances in the sample to be tested).

In practice, the refractive index can be used to determine the mixing ratio of a mixture of substances very accurately, especially when the amount of only one of the components varies in the mixture. Therefore, this is also a quantitative analysis method. For known compounds or mixtures, quality control can be performed by refractive index. For blending processes such as olive oil or fruit juice, the measured value within a certain range can very clearly characterize the quality of the blended sample.

Refractometry can be used for quality control of substances.

In most two-component mixed solutions, there is a very clear relationship between the refractive index and the liquid composition ratio. For example, the sugar solution is the most researched at present. The refractometer can quickly and accurately measure the content of solids in the sugar solution. Note: the usual unit of the sugar solution is Brix (also abbreviated as BX).

Due to the correlation between refractive index and density, the density of most samples can also be directly measured by refractometry.
