Determination of wind speed Commonly used instruments are cup anemometers, wing anemometers, Katah thermometers and hot bulb electric anemometers. Wing and cup anemometers are easy to use, but their inertia and mechanical friction resistance are large, and they are only suitable for measuring large wind speeds.


Anemometer, also known as anemometer, anemometer, is an instrument that measures the speed of air. There are many types of it. The most commonly used in meteorological stations is the wind cup anemometer. It consists of three parabolic cone empty cups fixed on the bracket at 120° to each other to form the sensing part. The concave surfaces of the empty cups are all in one direction. The entire induction part is installed on a vertical rotating shaft. Under the action of the wind, the wind cup rotates around the shaft at a speed proportional to the wind speed. Another type of rotary anemometer is the propeller anemometer, which consists of a three-blade or four-blade propeller to form a sensing part, which is installed at the front end of a wind vane so that it is always aligned with the direction of the wind. The blades rotate about the horizontal axis at a speed proportional to the wind speed.


Commonly used types of anemometers are: anemometers made by using the principle that the heat dissipation rate of the heated object is related to the wind speed; ultrasonic anemometers made by using the principle that the propagation speed of sound waves is affected by the wind speed and thus increases and decreases.
