Paper mills are closely related to our lives, and the economic benefits they bring are also very optimistic. However, paper mills also produce a large amount of waste gas, which has a significant impact on the safety of workers and the environment.


Paper pulp mill is a chemical production process with plant fiber as raw material, but in each link of its production, due to various physical and chemical reactions and fuel combustion, various gases will be emitted, seriously polluting the atmospheric environment.


The main waste gases released into the atmosphere from paper and pulp mills include sulfur compounds, chlorine compounds, nitrogen compounds, inorganic dust, organic gases, etc. There are two main types of sulfur compound dissipation: one is malodorous gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl disulfide. The main sources of these gases are pulping by kraft method and alkali recovery process ; Another type is sulfur oxide SOX, mainly from acid sulfite pulping process, but also from neutral sulfite and bisulfite to varying degrees.


The emission of chlorine compounds in paper mills is small, mainly CL2 and CLO2. The dissipation of chlorine compounds is "diffusion type", that is, there is generally no specific point source dissipation, and thus diffuses from storage tanks, washing machines, trenches, etc.


Nitrogen oxides can be produced from any combustion process.


The release of inorganic dust mainly comes from recovery boilers, fuel (oil or coal) boilers and lime kilns. Such dusts are mainly sulfates and carbonates.


Volatile organic compounds mainly come from raw material preparation workshops, such as dry debarking drums of logs, dry debarking of bagasse, and processing and purification of grass raw materials, such as non-condensable gases from depressurization of cooking and evaporation of waste liquids.


In addition, the sludge sedimentation tanks produced by papermaking will also produce odor due to fermentation.


The types and hazards of waste gas produced by paper mills are serious. In recent years, accidents caused by gas poisoning among paper mill employees have occurred frequently. The main causes of employee poisoning accidents caused by waste gas in paper mills are as follows:


1. There are misunderstandings in the identification of limited spaces.


Paper mills involve typical workplaces with limited space, such as regulating pools and sewage treatment stations. Some people believe that such open pools do not belong to limited spaces, and will not cause personnel poisoning, so they relax their vigilance.


2. Poisoning and suffocation is the main type of operation accidents in limited space of paper mills.


In the process of dredging, cleaning, inspection and maintenance, it is very easy to cause poisoning by hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide and other toxic and harmful gases and asphyxiation accidents due to lack of oxygen. If the unit involved in the accident did not conduct a comprehensive identification and assessment of the operation risks in the limited space, did not implement the dangerous operation approval system, did not strictly abide by the operating procedures of "ventilate first, then inspect, and then operate", and did not confirm the safety conditions such as inspection, protection, and monitoring. Carrying out the operation under the condition can easily lead to accidents.


3. Blind rescue led to increased casualties.


Due to the lack of basic emergency knowledge and self-rescue and mutual-rescue capabilities of the accident unit and on-site personnel, as well as the lack of personal protective equipment and emergency equipment, they rescued blindly without clarifying the hazard factors and taking reliable protective measures, resulting in increased casualties.


Therefore, for safety reasons, paper mills need to do a good job of monitoring toxic and harmful gases, install gas detectors, and monitor the concentration of toxic and harmful gases in the atmosphere in real time to ensure that the lives of employees are not violated.


Gas detectors commonly used in paper mills include flammable gas detection alarms, hydrogen sulfide gas detectors, oxygen detectors, hydrogen chloride gas detection alarms, etc. Management personnel should analyze the processes prone to gas leakage according to the situation of the factory area, and install corresponding gas detectors at appropriate locations to ensure the safety of the gas environment in the factory area.
