Application of Switching Power Supplies to Professional Power Amplifiers

The professional power amplifier switching power supply we are discussing here is a new type of power supply developed on the basis of modern high-frequency switching regulated power supplies, with its large-loop feedback removed. It eliminates the contradiction of insufficient instantaneous power supply for the large dynamic output of power amplifiers caused by the sudden drop in switching transition rate, which results from adjusting the switching pulse width for voltage regulation. It is a newly developed dedicated switching power supply for FPA brand professional power amplifiers, featuring no feedback, no voltage regulation, and excellent floating load driving capability - this is the topic of our discussion today.

In addition to the above advantages, the dedicated high-frequency switching power supply for FPA professional power amplifiers is equipped with unique soft turn-on, soft turn-off, and power factor correction (PFC) circuit modules. This eliminates impulse interference and pollution to the power grid during power-on and power-off, and increases AC power utilization efficiency by more than 40%. Comprehensive protection circuits against overvoltage, undervoltage, overload, and short circuit are another highlight of this power supply. Furthermore, an intelligent voltage limiting circuit is adopted to completely eliminate clipping distortion under various loads (1Ω–16Ω) and different power levels. The power supply also supports a wide load range and can operate stably for a long time even at 2Ω load, providing strong adaptability. It features bridge mode and an advanced temperature control system. Notably, it also offers automatic adaptability to the input signal sensitivity of the entire system (0dB to +20dB), greatly enhancing compatibility with various audio sources.

The maximum output power of this power supply ranges from 4000W to 5000W. Current models provide maximum DC output voltages of ±75V and ±150V, with a single-side current of 30A, fully meeting the power supply requirements for Class H professional power amplifiers.

Corresponding amplifier outputs include 950W continuous RMS power at 8Ω/85V and 1200W continuous RMS power at 4Ω/70V. The matching company model is the FPA CE1200, whose weight is only one‑quarter that of conventional designs and housed in a 2U chassis.

Thanks to the application of switching power supply technology, professional power amplifiers exhibit numerous advantages, representing the development trend of the industry and standing as an outstanding product in the current professional audio market.
