Calculation Method for Stereomicroscope Magnification
"How do you calculate the magnification of a stereomicroscope?" We frequently receive customer inquiry calls of this kind during sales. Here we provide a detailed explanation for your reference.
At present, our Mait microscopes include stereomicroscopes and monocular video microscopes. Essentially, monocular video microscopes are derived from stereomicroscopes, integrating optical, mechanical and electronic components to help observers magnify and analyze microscopic specimens more effectively.
First, let us look at how the magnification of a stereomicroscope is determined. A stereomicroscope has objective magnification and eyepiece magnification. Total magnification of stereomicroscope = Objective magnification × Eyepiece magnification
Example: For our MZS0870 stereomicroscope, the zoom objective is set at the 6.5× mark, a 20× eyepiece is used, plus an additional 0.5× auxiliary objective lens. Total magnification: 6.5 × 20 × 0.5 = 65×
Next, we introduce the magnification calculation for monocular video microscopes: Total magnification = Optical magnification × Digital magnification
Digital magnification = Diagonal size of the monitor screen ÷ Diagonal size of the CCD sensor target
Diagonal dimensions of CCD sensors:
1/3 inch CCD: 6 mm
1/2 inch CCD: 8 mm
2/3 inch CCD: 11 mm
Example: Digital magnification of a 14-inch monitor paired with a 1/3-inch CCD sensor 14 × 25.4 ÷ 6 = 59.27
