Can a clamp ammeter measure direct current?

Oct 13, 2022

Clamp ammeter is a special instrument for measuring alternating current. Its front end is a current transformer. It realizes the measurement task through the principle of electromagnetic induction.

Clamp ammeter cannot test DC current, because DC has no alternating magnetic field, so no secondary current will be generated in the clamp transformer, so it is impossible for clamp ammeter to measure DC current.

Clamp-on ammeters are generally used to measure alternating current. It is made according to the principle of alternating current vortex, which is a bit like a transformer, and obtains signals through electromagnetic induction. The ammeters that measure DC are used in series on the circuit, but in theory, it is possible to make a DC clamp meter. The method of measuring DC current with an AC and DC clamp ammeter and the measurement of an AC clamp ammeter AC current is used in much the same way. Select the appropriate range, snap a wire whose current is to be tested into the center of the jaw, and the corresponding current will be displayed on the display.
