Can industrial infrared thermometers measure body temperature

 

First of all, we can be clear that we cannot! Infrared thermometers are generally used to measure the temperature of solid heat sources, such as molding machine screws, heating coils, human bodies, etc. They sense the temperature through the reflected laser beam.


The infrared forehead temperature gun measures the surface temperature of the forehead, then corrects it through algorithms, and finally obtains the body temperature. However, changes in ambient temperature can cause variations in measured values. The accuracy of the instruments also varies, and the accuracy of professional medical infrared thermometers is guaranteed, with a minimum error. Generally, the allowable error for temperature measurement is 0.2 degrees, otherwise it will lose its medical significance.


Industrial infrared thermometers are not recommended for medical use, but they can be used for screening purposes, and diagnosis still requires a doctor. The role of investigation is to identify high-risk suspected individuals and subsequently diagnose them through other means.


Of course, it is still necessary to have an infrared thermometer. It is at least much more accurate than industrial infrared thermometers. This accuracy is achieved at the expense of the range. Physically, the peak wavelength of infrared radiation energy will also vary with different temperatures.


What is the difference between infrared thermometers and industrial thermometers?


1. Measurement distance:
Infrared thermometers measure distances that are relatively close. Generally, infrared probes measure at a distance of more than ten centimeters from the forehead, while industrial thermometers need to ensure personnel safety. The distance is much larger, ranging from a few centimeters near to several tens of meters far.


2. Measurement range:
The range of infrared thermometers is generally between 3045 ℃, but the range of industrial thermometers is much larger, ranging from minus tens of degrees Celsius to over 3000 degrees Celsius.


3. Measurement accuracy:
Infrared thermometers are more accurate than industrial thermometers, usually at 0.1 ℃, because they measure the body temperature of the human body and have a small measurement range.


Issues to pay attention to when using infrared thermometers
1. Only measuring surface temperature, infrared thermometer cannot measure internal temperature.


2. Wavelength above 5um cannot be measured through quartz glass for temperature measurement. Glass has special reflection and transmission characteristics, and precise infrared temperature readings are not allowed. But temperature can be measured through an infrared window. It is best not to use infrared thermometers for temperature measurement on bright or polished metal surfaces (such as stainless steel, aluminum, etc.).


3. To locate a hotspot, aim the instrument at the target and then scan up and down on the target until the hotspot is identified.


4. Pay attention to environmental conditions: steam, dust, smoke, etc. It obstructs the optical system of the instrument and affects accurate temperature measurement.


5. The ambient temperature, if the thermometer is suddenly exposed to an ambient temperature difference of 20 ℃ or higher, allows the instrument to adjust to the new ambient temperature within 20 minutes.
