Correct Usage Methods and Basic Maintenance Measures for Multimeters

Multimeters are widely used in experimental and internship teaching, as well as in the maintenance of instruments and meters. This article introduces the correct usage methods and requirements of multimeters, as well as precautions for their use.

Multimeters come in various structural forms, with knobs and switches arranged differently on the panel. Therefore, before using a multimeter, it is essential to carefully understand and familiarize yourself with the functions of each component, while also distinguishing the measurement quantities corresponding to each scale on the dial.

Special attention should be paid to the correct use of multimeters, as the vast majority of multimeter failures are caused by improper operation. In fact, using a multimeter correctly is the best way to maintain it.

Additionally, only by using the multimeter correctly can measurement errors be minimized. Before use, the multimeter should be placed horizontally, and the pointer should be checked to see if it is at zero. If it is not at zero, adjust the mechanical zero adjustment screw in the middle of the multimeter to make the pointer point to zero. Connect the red test lead to the red terminal or the jack marked with a "+" sign, and the black test lead to the black terminal or the jack marked with a "−" sign.

Rotate the function switch to the required position according to the measurement object. For example, when measuring AC voltage, the function switch should be rotated to the corresponding range. On some multimeters, the type selection knob and the range conversion knob are set separately. During use, first rotate the type selection knob to the gear corresponding to the measured quantity, and then rotate the range conversion knob to the appropriate range. Special attention should be paid to the selection of the measurement type, as incorrect selection may lead to serious

consequences.
