Description of the role of BGA soldering station and precautions when soldering

Oct 17, 2022

BGA rework station is another name for a GA soldering station. It is a specialized tool used when a BGA chip needs to be replaced or when there are welding issues. The commonly used heating equipment (such as a heat gun) cannot satisfy the needs of BGA chip soldering because of the comparatively high temperature requirements.

When operating, the BGA soldering station follows a typical reflow soldering curve. As a result, utilizing it for BGA rework has very positive results. A better BGA soldering station can increase success rates to above 98%.

Welding Notes:

1. Reasonable temperature adjustment during preheating: The motherboard must be fully heated prior to BGA welding in order to prevent deformation during heating and to allow temperature compensation for subsequent heating.

2. The PCB must be secured and tightened with clamps at both ends while the BGA is soldering the chip, making sure that it is positioned suitably between the upper and lower air outlets. The accepted practice is to touch the motherboard without shaking.

3. Find a motherboard with a flat PCB that isn't deformed, use the welding station's own curve for welding, and once the fourth curve is finished, insert the temperature monitoring line that comes with the welding station between the chip and the PCB. , to determine the current temperature. Without lead, the optimum temperature can reach about 217 degrees, whereas lead raises it to about 183 degrees. Theoretically, the melting points of the two solder balls mentioned above are these two temperatures. However, the solder balls at the chip's base are still not fully melted. The ideal temperature from a maintenance standpoint is around 235 degrees without lead and around 200 degrees with lead. To acquire the best strength, the chip solder balls are now melted and then cooled.

4. When chip welding, the alignment must be exact.

5. Use the right quantity of flux paste: Before soldering the chip, apply a thin coating of flux paste with a little brush to the cleaned pad, being sure to spread it out evenly. Avoid overbrushing since this will also harm the soldering. You can use a brush to apply a little amount of flux paste all around the chip when repairing soldering.
