Extended Applications of Microscopes in Biology

I. Botany

(1) Electron microscopy is applied to observe the ultrastructure of plant tissues, explore their growth and developmental mechanisms, and reveal the relationship between plant structure and function. It provides theoretical support for improving plant functions and increasing crop yield. Olympus microscopes are used for this purpose.(2) It observes variations of plant organs during growth, providing a basis for developing advanced cultivation techniques.(3) It characterizes structures such as pollen, pericarp, seed coat and leaf epidermis, supplying scientific evidence for palynology and plant taxonomy.

II. Entomology

By observing insect organs and tissues, we can better understand their physiological functions. This provides a foundation for exploring various life phenomena and rules, and offers theoretical support for pest prevention and control.(2) Electron microscopy (EM) is used to observe the micro-characteristics of insects, providing important references for insect taxonomy, entomology, and pest forecasting and early warning.

III. Microbiology

(1) It observes and studies the ultrastructural morphology of mycoplasma and other microorganisms, investigates viral structure and development, and provides means for the discovery and identification of new viruses and viroids.(2) It studies the structural morphology of bacteria, actinomycetes and other microbes. This is of great significance for their classification, genus identification and pathogen judgment. Further insights can be obtained regarding pathogen activity, spore germination and host invasion.

IV. Pathology

Olympus microscopes are used to study ultrastructural pathological changes in cells, tissues and organs of animals, plants and insects, providing a scientific basis for disease prevention and treatment. Autoradiography combined with electron microscopy and related EM techniques are widely adopted.

V. Wood Science

(1) Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is used to study the ultrastructure of wood, supporting tree species identification and wood classification. It also supplies evidence for investigating the relationship between wood structure, growing environment and utilization value.(2) SEM is applied to research the properties of modified, weathered and decayed wood, offering new references for wood processing and comprehensive utilization.(3) Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is used for further classification of wood, providing theoretical support for optimizing processing technologies and adjusting growth environments.
