How to choose between a pointer - type multimeter and a digital multimeter?

A multimeter, as a multi-purpose portable instrument, can measure a wide variety of physical quantities, such as AC and DC current, AC and DC voltage, resistance, capacitance, inductance, and audio level, etc. Generally, multimeters can be divided into two types: analog pointer multimeters and digital multimeters. Based on my experience of using multimeters, when it comes to measuring and checking the circuit, an analog pointer multimeter is sufficient. For example, when checking the three pins and the type of a transistor whose model is unknown during work, I think an analog pointer multimeter is more convenient. When specific numerical values of the circuit need to be measured and when the measured data needs to be read, a digital multimeter is more suitable.

Selection of Multimeters

I think the choice of a multimeter should be based on one's own work nature and requirements. If we are engaged in the ordinary electronic and electrical industry or are enthusiasts in this field, I think an ordinary multimeter can meet our work needs.

Selection of Analog Pointer Multimeters

Firstly, when purchasing an analog pointer multimeter, the quality should be the primary consideration. A multimeter with good quality generally won't have any problems within three to five years. If it is of poor quality, within three to five months, at the least, the test leads may break. At worst, there will be small faults such as the inability to zero the ohmmeter or poor contact, which will be very annoying during use. When choosing an analog pointer multimeter, besides asking the merchant to measure some simple physical quantities, I will also weigh it in my hand. A multimeter with good quality will feel quite "heavy" in the hand, while a poor-quality analog pointer multimeter will feel light. Meanwhile, the quality can also be reflected in its workmanship and materials.

Secondly, it is advisable to choose an analog pointer multimeter of a well-known brand, because a good brand guarantees the quality. For example, the MF-47 series of analog pointer multimeters, the MF500 type of multimeter, etc., are all good choices. In my daily work, I use an MF470 analog pointer multimeter, and I have been using it for many years and it is still in use.

Selection of Digital Multimeters

When choosing a digital multimeter, in addition to considering the quality factor, I think the display accuracy of the multimeter should also be taken into account. We can choose the accuracy and the number of digits displayed according to our own work needs. Generally, the display accuracy of digital multimeters can be three and a half digits or four and a half digits. The more digits displayed, the higher the accuracy. In addition, the functions and measurement range should be selected according to the needs. If too many functions are selected but they are not used in the work, it will be a waste.

There are many choices for digital multimeters. For example, brands like UNI-T, Fluke, Victor, etc. I usually use a UNI-T digital multimeter. If there are no special requirements, an ordinary digital multimeter can generally meet our work needs.
