How to confirm the live wire, neutral wire and ground wire with a test pen
1. Determine the live and neutral wires
Contact one end of the wire with the screwdriver of the electric pen, press the top with the thumb, and if the light is on, it is the live wire, and if it is not on, it is the neutral wire. Non contactor voltage tester can be used to determine whether it is a live wire or a live wire. Operation method:
(1) When the electric pen is close to an object with voltage, it will emit a buzzing sound, indicating a live wire. This electric pen can measure AC voltage between 90V and 1000V.
(2) When approaching the zero line without voltage, the electric pen will not make any sound, proving that this is the zero line.
2. Electric pen measuring live wire and neutral wire
Hold the electric pen with the thumb and middle finger, and hold the pen cap or pen hook with the index finger. Do not touch the metal pen tip on the head to prevent electric shock.
Use the tip of the electric pen to touch the wires separately. When the induction light inside the pen lights up, this wire is a live wire, otherwise it is a neutral or ground wire.
Charged wires are not necessarily live wires. In the event of a fault, the neutral or ground wire may be charged, while the live wire may not be charged.
3. Use a multimeter to detect live and neutral wires
In addition, a multimeter can be used to distinguish between live and neutral wires. The method for distinguishing between neutral and live wires with a multimeter is as follows:
(1) Select AC voltage range of 750V for the multimeter, with black probe COM socket, red probe voltage, and resistance socket.
(2) The black probe is suspended in the air, and the red probe is used to measure. Pay attention to the reading, with the larger number indicating the live wire and the smaller number indicating the neutral wire. When distinguishing between neutral wires with a multimeter, the value can be ignored, with the larger value indicating the live wire and the smaller value indicating the neutral wire.
The method of measuring neutral and live wires with an electric pen
1. Although the three wires have the same color and were not marked at the time, it is easy to determine the live wire. Go to the power switch and turn it on, then come back and measure the three wires with an electric pen. One of the wires will definitely make the pen light up, and this wire is the live wire.
2. After distinguishing the live line, only the neutral line and the ground line remain. To distinguish between neutral and ground wires, we need to use commonly used household appliances such as mobile phone chargers, desk lamps, light bulbs, and rice cookers. We can use light bulbs as examples to test the neutral and ground wires; If the light bulb is on, it is the neutral wire. If the light bulb is not on, it is the ground wire. This confirms the live wire and neutral wire.
