How to correctly choose the installation location of the combustible gas detection instrument?

Oct 20, 2022

The flammable gas detection probe cannot readily be moved once it has been installed in a fixed-point location. According to years of work experience, the following factors need to be taken into account in particular applications.

(1) Identify the potential leakage locations of the device to be monitored, evaluate the pressure, direction, and other parameters that may affect a leak, and then build a map of the distribution of the probe positions that is separated into three grades—I, II, and III—based on the severity of the leak.

(2) In the event of a significant leakage, identify the direction in which the flammable gas will leak according to local conditions such as the airflow direction and wind direction.

(3) A three-dimensional flow trend diagram of the leakage is created, and an initial set point scheme is established at the downstream position of the flow, depending on the density of the spilled gas (more or less than air), paired with the air flow trend.

(4) Examine whether the leak spot is leaking in a jet-like or micro-leak manner. The set point should be located nearer to the leak spot if it is a little leak. Move a little bit away from the leak if it is a jet leak. On the basis of these circumstances, a final site plan was created. The amount and variety of purchases can be estimated in this way.

(5) In accordance with applicable laws, a detection point should be put up every 10–20 meters for locations with significant flammable gas leaks. The potential for hazardous gas leaks must be considered in small, irregular pump rooms that are not manned. Typically, a detector needs to be put in at the downdraft.

(6) The detector for locations where hydrogen leaks should be mounted on the plane above the leaking point.

(7) Install the detector on a lower plane than the leaking point in a medium whose gas density is higher than that of air and take note of the features of the immediate surroundings. Setting up safety monitoring sites for locations where flammable gas is likely to gather requires special consideration.

(8) It is simple to make the flammable gas content in the air of a specific part approach or achieve the lower explosion limit concentration in an open environment for the diffusion and escape of flammable gases. You cannot overlook these safety monitoring points.

An examination of on-site occurrences revealed that faulty installation and calibration were to blame for more than half of them. The measures for appropriate installation and calibration must therefore be introduced.
