How to Correctly Use Flammable Gas Detectors
As required by national regulations, gas detectors are essential alarm equipment for safe production. They can effectively prevent explosions and poisoning accidents caused by gas leakage. Given their great importance, how should we select such devices? Below is a brief analysis of the criteria for purchasing this type of equipment.
Many users may wonder: after purchasing a flammable gas detector, how can I verify whether it works properly? The verification method is relatively simple. Most workshops keep test gas. Pour a small amount of test gas or liquid into a mineral‑water bottle and tighten the cap. Puncture a tiny hole in the cap with a sharp object, aim the hole at the sensor probe of the flammable gas detector, and observe whether the readings on the detector panel change.
Special attention: some flammable substances are in liquid form and evaporate slowly. Shake the mineral‑water bottle during testing to accelerate evaporation. In addition, fixed gas detectors usually adopt natural‑diffusion sampling. The device will respond only after leaked gas diffuses to the detector.
If the above‑mentioned method seems inconvenient, a lighter can be used for a quick functional test. Light the lighter, blow out the flame while keeping the gas valve open so that the lighter keeps releasing gas, and aim the gas outlet at the detector probe. Do not keep this operation for too long. The gas released by the lighter has an extremely high concentration. Prolonged exposure will produce readings exceeding the detector measuring range, which may shorten the service life of the instrument over time.
It is more difficult to verify whether the detector reading is accurate. You need standard‑concentration test gas, and compare the detector display value with the known standard concentration (certain error is permitted according to national standards). If the reading matches the reference value or the deviation is minor, the detector works correctly.
