How to Maintain Clarity of the Microscope Optical Path

The optical path of a microscope consists of the eyepiece, objective lens, upper or lower light source and lamp housing. These components form an optical path system. If any component malfunctions, the entire system will fail to work properly. Below is a brief explanation of how to keep the microscope optical path clear.

① The front lenses of eyepieces and objective lenses are easily contaminated by dust, dirt and oil. When contrast and clarity degrade or haze appears, use a magnifying glass to carefully inspect the front surfaces of the eyepieces and objective lenses.

② It is critical to preserve the optical performance of the microscope. Cover the microscope with the supplied dust cover when not in use. If dust or dirt accumulates on optical surfaces or the instrument, blow away dust with an air blower or remove contaminants using a soft brush before wiping.

③ Optical surfaces shall be cleaned with lint-free cloth, lens paper, or cotton swabs moistened with special lens cleaning solution. Avoid excessive solvent during cleaning. Lens paper or swabs should be moderately dampened; excess solvent must not seep into the objective lens, which will degrade image clarity and damage the objective.

④ Low-power objective lenses have relatively large front lens groups. They can be wiped using ethanol-moistened cotton cloth wrapped around a finger, cotton swabs or lens paper. 40× and 100× objectives require extra careful inspection with a magnifying glass. High-power objectives adopt front lens groups with concave surfaces of small radius of curvature to achieve high flatness. Clean this lens group using toothpicks with cotton tips or cotton swabs. Wipe the lens surface gently. Do not apply excessive force or perform scraping motions, and ensure the cotton tip contacts the concave lens surface. After cleaning, inspect the objective lens for damage with a magnifying glass. If the observation tube must be opened, take care not to touch the exposed lens underneath. Fingerprints on the lens surface reduce imaging clarity, which should be wiped off using the same cleaning method for objective and eyepiece lenses.
