How to Use a Digital Multimeter to Find Capacitance

Using a resistance range measurement, first short circuit the two pins of the capacitor for discharge, then connect the red lead to the positive electrode and the black lead to the negative electrode. If there is data and the data keeps increasing, and finally display 1, it is generally good.

1. Estimating the size of microwave method level capacitor capacity: It can be determined based on experience or referring to standard capacitors of the same capacity, and the maximum amplitude of pointer oscillation.

2. Estimating the capacity of a picosecond capacitor: R should be used × 10k Ω range, but can only measure capacitance above 1000pF. For capacitors of 1000pF or slightly larger, as long as the watch needle swings slightly, the capacity is considered sufficient.

3. Test for leakage of capacitance: For capacitors above 1000 microf, R can be used first × Quickly charge it at 10 Ω level and preliminarily estimate the capacitance capacity, then change it to R × Continue measuring at 1k Ω level for a while, and at this point, the pointer should not return, but should stop at or very close to ∞, otherwise there will be leakage.

4. Turn the function switch to the 20uF or 200uF position, place the probes in the middle two holes, and measure the capacitance at both poles. At this point, the capacity will be displayed. If it is a used capacitor, it must be discharged before measurement.

Digital multimeter capacitance test

Before connecting the capacitor to be tested, it is important to note that it takes time to reset each time the range is changed, and the presence of drift readings will not affect the testing accuracy

1. Place the function switch in the capacitor range C (F)

2. Insert the capacitor into the capacitor test stand

Precautions:

1. The instrument itself has set protection for the capacitance range, so polarity and capacitor charging and discharging are not considered during the capacitance testing process

2. When measuring capacitance, insert the capacitance into a dedicated capacitance test stand

3. It takes some time to stabilize the reading when measuring large capacitors

4. Unit conversion of capacitance: 1 μ F=106pFl μ F=103nF
