Precise Procedures for Voltage Measurement with a Multimeter

A multimeter is a portable instrument capable of measuring voltage. It is one of the commonly used tools for electronic engineers, scientists, and enthusiasts in both the laboratory and daily life. The following will detail the steps for using a multimeter to measure voltage, as well as the gear positions to be selected during voltage measurement.

The method steps are as follows: 1. Preparation Before conducting measurements, it is first necessary to confirm whether the power supply of the circuit under test has been turned off, and to verify that the multimeter is in normal working condition. Then, select the appropriate voltage measurement range.

2. Select the appropriate voltage measurement range. Multimeters usually offer multiple voltage measurement ranges. To obtain accurate measurement results, it is necessary to select the appropriate range based on the estimated range of the voltage to be measured. If the voltage to be measured may be high, a higher range should be selected; otherwise, a lower range should be chosen.

3. Wiring: Connect the red probe of the multimeter to the positive voltage input terminal, and the black probe to the negative voltage input terminal. The red probe is usually connected to the "VΩmA" jack, while the black probe is connected to the "COM" jack.

4. Voltage Measurement: Connect the black probe (common probe) to the grounding wire of the circuit under test, which is the zero potential point in the circuit. Then, connect the red probe to the measurement point where the voltage is to be measured. Ensure good contact between both probes and the circuit. Once the connections are made, the power supply can be turned on.

5. Reading Measurement Results When measuring voltage, it is necessary to read the measurement results on the display screen of the multimeter. If the multimeter has an automatic range selection function, it will automatically select the appropriate range to measure the voltage. If the multimeter does not have an automatic range selection function, you need to rotate the rotary knob to select the appropriate range for the voltage being measured. When reading the voltage measurement result, keep your eyes perpendicular to the dial to avoid visual bias.

6. After completing the measurement by turning off the power, it is necessary to shut down the power supply and disconnect the multimeter from the circuit being tested.
