Seven essential functions for gas detectors

The design purpose of gas detectors is to help you make safety decisions more easily. The new "intelligent" function not only provides clear gas detector status and sensor information, but also reminds what to do after an alarm. This way, you don't have to worry about interpreting the alarm readings of the gas detector.

However, despite having so many features available, you still struggle to figure out what is truly important and how to make your work safer? To ensure your safety, your gas detector must have seven essential functions.

1. Correct reading
Starting from the basics, if there may be gas hazards in your environment and you are looking for a gas detector. Therefore, the detector you need to choose needs to be able to detect these gases and display the gas concentration values correctly.

Before configuring a suitable gas detector, the following questions need to be answered first:

What gas hazards exist in your workplace?

How many gases do you need to monitor simultaneously?

Are there any other gases that may cause cross interference?

Although there is currently no multi-purpose gas detector on the market that can detect all potential gas hazards, personal multi gas detectors are already moving towards this trend. Find suitable sensors to help detect gases that may be encountered or present that may cause harm.

2. Compliant with personal protective equipment requirements
In order to accurately measure the degree of gas exposure, your gas detector must be able to detect according to national safety regulations. For example, if ammonia (NH3) is present on site, the gas detector must be able to detect ammonia with a concentration greater than 300 ppm. However, many gas detectors can only measure ammonia at 0-100 ppm. This raises a question. If the range of the device cannot exceed 300 ppm, how do you determine if your PPE can provide sufficient protection?

To avoid this issue, choose a gas detector with a measurement range that meets the requirements of personal protective equipment. If you are looking for a gas detector to detect whether ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfur dioxide (SO2), or carbon monoxide (CO) meets the range standards, this is particularly crucial.

3. Flexibility to meet application requirements
Most multi gas detectors come in two versions: pump suction detection and diffusion detection - but these two versions cannot be switched freely. That is to say, you can use the diffusion version for personal protection, but you cannot use it for sampling and detection in confined spaces.

Pump suction gas detector extracts gas from unknown, potentially toxic or flammable gas environments into the detector to determine if the area is safe. Actually, it is the pump that helps you avoid harm. Only after evaluating the air sample using a pump suction gas detector and confirming that there are no toxic or flammable gases, can one enter the target confined space to perform any work tasks. However, the pump will not increase the detection range or efficiency of the gas detector. The gas detector only detects gases passing through the sensor. The pump in the gas detector will not increase the amount of gas sensed by the sensor. The pump facilitates remote sampling and detection of unknown spaces for you.
