Stage Maintenance & Storage for Metallographic Microscopes
According to application requirements, the stage of a metallographic microscope does not require high mechanical strength, yet high flatness of the stage surface and perpendicularity of the optical system axis are mandatory. Otherwise, even high-performance objectives will affect the uniformity of image clarity in the field of view. For this reason, specimens weighing more than 2 kg shall not be placed on the stage. Prevent the stage from impact; never strike the stage surface with a hammer or other objects to avoid surface deformation and degradation of instrument performance. Do not place heavy objects on the stage for a long time. Remove heavy specimens when the microscope is not in use to prevent damage to the lifting mechanism. Apply an appropriate amount of grease to moving parts periodically.
When using the microscope in cold seasons, the stage movement may become sluggish, which is caused by solidified lubricating oil or increased viscosity. In this case, drop gasoline into the four small holes on the stage surface to slowly dissolve the grease. Then remove the stage and slide block, clean the oil contamination thoroughly with gasoline, and refill with suitable lubricating oil to eliminate the fault.
Storage while in service
The microscope shall be kept under the charge of dedicated personnel. The storage room should be a separate space that is clean, well-lit and dry.
The metallographic microscope is preferably stored in an instrument cabinet and placed on separate shelves by type. Desiccants (such as silica gel, calcium chloride, charcoal, etc.) should be placed on the lowest shelf. Ventilation holes shall be arranged between shelves. The cabinet shall be kept more than 0.5 m away from the wall and more than 0.2 m above the ground. An instrument log sheet shall be hung on the cabinet. Large and medium-sized metallographic microscopes shall be placed on a dedicated table and covered with a glass hood with moisture absorbent inside.
Wipe the instrument before storage. Apply a small amount of anti-rust oil to areas with peeling paint or oxidation.
Do not store the microscope inside its shipping packaging case for long-term storage (over one month).
Carry out regular inspection, wiping and ventilation according to climate changes. Take prompt measures once any problems are found.
