The Correct Selection of Portable Gas Detectors

The Correct Selection of Portable Gas Detectors

1. If methane and other alkanes with relatively low toxicity are predominant, choosing an LEL detector is undoubtedly the most suitable option. The detection principle of combustible gas is catalytic combustion, which is a very common detection principle. Calibrating the instrument is also very convenient. Since this technology is relatively mature, domestic gas detectors can also meet the requirements of users.

The following are domestic and imported portable combustible gas alarm instruments that have received good reviews from users:

Domestic recommendations: The JL268D, JL269 leak detector, ADY-1, and HL-200 series have also received favorable feedback from users.

Imported recommendations: The MC-W combustible gas alarm instrument from BW Company in Canada; the ImpulseX1 detector from Honeywell; the XP-3110 detector, XP-3160 pump-suction alarm instrument, and XP-3140 leak detector from COMCOS; the miniEX combustible gas detector from RAE Systems; the EX2000 detector from OLDHAM; the PAC EX2 and X-am 2000 combustible gas alarm instruments from Drager.

2. If there are some toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, oxygen, hydrogen, phosphine, etc., a portable single toxic gas detector or a portable multi-gas detector should be preferentially selected to ensure the safety of workers. Toxic gas detectors use the electrochemical principle for detection. The concentration measured by a toxic gas detector based on the electrochemical principle is usually in ppm units.

Note: When detecting these toxic gases, except for carbon monoxide and oxygen, for which domestic instruments can be considered, it is recommended to use imported instruments for other toxic gases.

Imported recommendations: The GAXT series of single toxic gas alarm instruments from BW; the ImpulseXP single detector from Honeywell; the T40 detector from MSA; the TX2000 single detector from OLDHAM; the Pac 5000, pac7000, and pac Ⅲ single toxic gas alarm instruments from Drager.

3. If there are more organic toxic and harmful gases, considering that their concentrations that may cause personnel poisoning are relatively low, such as aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, ammonia (amines), ethers, alcohols, esters, etc., a photoionization detector should be selected, and never use an LEL detector to deal with them, because this may lead to casualties.

Imported recommendations: The PGM-7600 detector, PGM-30 detector, PGM-7320 detector, PGM-7240 detector from RAE Systems, the M5 detector from BW Company in Canada, and the organic gas detector from Ion Science in the UK.

4. If the types of gases cover the above-mentioned categories of gases, a compound gas detector should be selected. This type of detector requires providing the gas composition of the measured space so that the sensors can be better configured.

Imported recommendations: The M5PID gas detector from BW Company in Canada, the PGM-54 compound detector, PGM-3000 multi-gas detector, and PGM-7800 organic compound detector from RAE Systems.
