What is oscilloscope triggering?

Any oscilloscope has limited memory, so all oscilloscopes must use triggering. A trigger is an event of interest to the user that the oscilloscope should find. In other words, it is something the user wants to look for in the waveform. A trigger can be an event (i.e., a problem in the waveform), but not all triggers are events. Examples of triggers include edge triggers, burr signal triggers, and digital code type triggers.

The reason oscilloscopes must use triggering is because of their limited memory capacity. For example, the Agilent 90000 series oscilloscopes have a memory depth of 2 billion samples. However, even with such a large amount of memory, the oscilloscope still needs some events to distinguish which 2 billion samples need to be displayed to the user. Although 2 billion samples may sound very large, it is still not enough to ensure that the oscilloscope memory can capture the event of interest.

The oscilloscope memory can be thought of as a conveyor belt. Whenever a new sample is taken, the sample is stored in the memory. When the memory is full, the oldest samples are deleted so that the newest samples can be saved. When a trigger event occurs, the oscilloscope captures enough samples to store the trigger event in the location requested by the memory (usually in the middle) and then displays this data to the user.

What does an oscilloscope do?
An oscilloscope is a very versatile electronic measuring instrument. It basically consists of a display circuit, a Y-axis amplification circuit, an X-axis amplification circuit, a scanning synchronisation circuit, and a power supply circuit. According to the different signals can be classified as analogue oscilloscopes, digital oscilloscopes, according to the structure and performance can be classified as ordinary oscilloscopes, multi-purpose oscilloscopes. It can be classified as analogue oscilloscope and digital oscilloscope according to different signals, ordinary oscilloscope, multi-purpose oscilloscope according to different structures and performances, multi-line oscilloscope, multi-trace oscilloscope, sampling oscilloscope, memory oscilloscope, digital oscilloscope. Two channels can be used for signal measurement separately, and the waveform of AC signal can be displayed.
