What is the difference between a buck switching power supply and a boost switching power supply?

 

Buck switching power supply and boost switching power supply are named according to their transformation method, and the main difference between them is that the transformation method of input voltage and output voltage as well as the application occasions are different. Specifically, their differences are mainly manifested in the following aspects:


The direction of voltage conversion: buck switching power supply lowers the input voltage to the output voltage, while boost switching power supply increases the input voltage to the output voltage.


Circuit structure: The circuit structure of buck switching power supply is different from that of boost switching power supply. Buck switching power supplies usually use a buck circuit, which consists of switching elements and transformers. The step-up switching power supply adopts a boost circuit, which consists of switching elements, inductors and capacitors.


Applicable occasions: Buck switching power supply is often used in electronic equipment, LED lighting and other occasions, because these devices usually need low voltage DC power supply to work. Boost switching power supplies are often used in solar panels, gas discharge lamps and other occasions, because these devices require a high voltage DC power supply to work.


Efficiency and Cost: Buck switching power supplies have higher conversion efficiency compared to boost switching power supplies. However, step-down switching power supplies have relatively higher component costs because they require larger inductive components to reduce power supply ripple voltage. The step-up switching power supply, on the other hand, has a relatively lower cost but a lower conversion efficiency.


In summary, the difference between buck switching power supply and boost switching power supply is mainly based on its input voltage and output voltage conversion method and application occasions.
