What is the difference between a switching power supply and a transformer?

 

For transformers, they are actually devices that can convert voltage. We usually call it a power transformer. But the difference between a switching power transformer and other transformers is that it has an additional switch tube compared to a regular transformer. In this way, a self-excited intermittent oscillator is formed, which can adjust the input DC voltage into high-frequency pulse voltage and output it.


In addition to the above functions, this product also has a more important role, which is the transmission and conversion of energy. In a flyback circuit, when we turn on the switching transistor, the corresponding transformer converts electrical energy into a magnetic field and stores it for processing. When we disconnect the switch tube, the magnetic field will also be converted into electrical energy.

Firstly, when we conduct the switching transistor, the relevant input voltage will be used to directly supply the load, and at the same time, energy will be stored through inductance. Once we disconnect the switch tube, electrical energy will be transferred to the load through the energy storage inductor.

The structures of these two classifications are different, and their working principles are also vastly different.
