In recent years, with the steady improvement of semiconductor integration and functionality, continuous improvement of simulation models, continuous structural changes, etc., the performance of electronic systems is constantly improving. This makes test equipment such as oscilloscopes much more important. Engineers rely on oscilloscopes to analyze the performance of serial device designs and support verification and debugging efforts. Their tasks include precise parameter measurement, troubleshooting and signal integrity analysis. Later in the development process, they turn to an oscilloscope to generate eye diagrams for compliance testing.


Engineers selecting an oscilloscope often consider only the specifications listed in product manuals and magazine advertising headlines. The most familiar metrics are bandwidth, sample rate, and record length. While these measures of oscilloscope performance are important, they do not provide a complete indication of how well the instrument will perform in actual, day-to-day use. For example, bandwidth specifications only indicate the general frequency range of an oscilloscope and have little to do with the instrument's ability to reliably detect and capture fast anomalies.


Therefore, when evaluating an oscilloscope, it's important to read between the lines of the key specifications. This advice actually has two meanings: first, it's best to deeply analyze the nuances hidden behind the technical specifications that manufacturers hype; second, remember to research certain features that may not be as good as the features most often touted on the market. That's nice and shiny, but they can significantly affect the effectiveness and even effectiveness of a designer's work.
