Why microscope oil lenses need to be filled with cedar oil

Cedar oil is a colorless or slightly yellow slightly viscous liquid. It is an aromatic oil obtained by distilling cypress wood. It contains olein and cedarwood and other ingredients, and can be used as perfume and microscope oil.

Why do microscope oil lenses need to be filled with cedar oil?
Because the magnification of the oil lens is high and the lens is small, when light passes through media objects of different densities (glass slide → air → lens), part of the light will be refracted and lost, resulting in less light entering the lens tube and a darker field of view. Objects cannot be observed clearly.

If cedar oil (n=1.515), which is similar to the refractive index of glass (n=1.52), is dropped between the lens and the glass, the light entering the oil lens will increase, the brightness of the field of view will be enhanced, and the object image will be clear.

What kind of cleaning fluid should be used to clean an optical microscope?
When cleaning the optical microscope, you can use a cleaning agent containing about 20% alcohol and about 80% ether.

Optical glass is used in instrument lenses, prisms, lenses, etc. During manufacturing and use, it is easy to be stained with oil, water-based dirt, fingerprints, etc., which affects imaging and light transmittance. To clean optical glass, different cleaning agents, different cleaning tools, and different cleaning methods should be used according to the characteristics of the dirt and different structures.

To clean lenses coated with antireflection coating, such as those of cameras, slide projectors, and microscopes, you can use a cleaning agent containing about 20% alcohol and about 80% ether. When cleaning, use a soft-bristled brush or cotton ball with a small amount of cleaning agent and make a circular motion from the center of the lens outward. Do not soak this type of lens in detergent for cleaning. Do not wipe it hard when cleaning the lens, otherwise it will damage the anti-reflection coating and damage the lens.

Optical microscope maintenance
1. You must be proficient in and strictly implement the operating procedures, and operate the microscope in accordance with strict procedures and instructions.

2. When picking up and delivering the microscope, be sure to hold the curved arm with one hand and support the base with the other hand. The microscope cannot be tilted to prevent the eyepieces from slipping out of the upper end of the tube. Be careful when handling the microscope.

3. When observing, do not move the position of the microscope at will.

4. The optical part of the microscope can only be wiped with special lens cleaning paper. Do not wipe it with other objects indiscriminately, and do not touch the lens with your fingers to avoid sweat staining the lens.

5. Keep the microscope dry and clean to avoid contamination by dust, water and chemical reagents.
