A tutorial on using a digital multimeter

The digital multimeter mainly has common measurement functions such as DC voltage, DC current, AC voltage, AC current, resistance, circuit on/off testing, diode testing, etc; With the development of electronic technology, multimeters have many application functions, such as data storage, data transmission, and oscilloscopes. Some of them have developed into professional application fields, such as power meters for power testing, leakage current testers, insulation resistance testers, infrared thermometers used in industrial and mining industries, and noise meters and anemometers for environmental testing. Taking the UT136B handheld digital multimeter from Unilever as an example, we will explain the knowledge of using a multimeter. UT136B is a 3l/2-digit digital multimeter, but in addition to voltage, current, and resistance testing functions, it also has capacitance, frequency, diode, on/off buzzer, automatic range, and clear gear range.

Measurement of AC and DC voltage:
Place the power switch in the ON position, turn the range switch to DCV (DC) or ACV (AC) as needed, insert the red probe into the V/Ω hole, and the black probe into the COM hole. Then connect the two probes to the measured point, and the voltage of the measured point will be directly displayed on the LCD display. When measuring the voltage of the instrument, a black probe should be used to contact the low potential end of the measured voltage (such as the common ground terminal of the signal generator or the casing), in order to reduce measurement errors. The automatic range multimeter does not need to consider manual range conversion. It measures 380V and 220V in one gear, which is simple, clear, and easy to understand, preventing misoperation.

Resistance measurement:
Insert the red probe into the V/Ω hole, the black probe into the COM hole, and then connect the two probes to both ends of the back resistance. The resistance value of the measured resistance will be directly displayed on the LCD screen display

On/Off Test:
The red probe is inserted into the V/Ω hole, the black probe is inserted into the COM hole, and the probe is connected to both ends of the tested circuit. If it is on/off, the buzzer will sound.

Capacitance testing:
Discharge the capacitor (especially large capacity electrolytic capacitors must be discharged first), otherwise it will burn out the multimeter. Insert the red probe into the V/Ω hole and the black probe into the COM hole, and connect the capacitor measurement.
