Application of laser rangefinder
Laser rangefinders are used in the recognition of three-dimensional objects, modeling, and various computer vision discrimination-related fields. This technology forms the core of time-of-flight 3D scanners. Compared to military-grade rangefinders, general laser rangefinders also provide high-accuracy scanning capabilities in one-way or 360-degree modes.
A number of algorithms have been developed to combine range data measured from multiple angles of a single object and generate a complete 3D model with as little error as possible. One of the advantages of laser rangefinders over other areas of computer vision is that there is no need to provide two associated images to provide depth information in stereo methods.
Through the use of laser rangefinders, computer vision discrimination techniques typically have depth resolutions below 0.1 mm.
