Does the moisture meter have a significant impact on leather

Leather has many different uses. From high-end fashion to furniture, to car interiors, you can easily find one or two leather products anytime, anywhere. However, the process of manufacturing good leather products is often lengthy and involves everything from shaving and preparing leather to tanning, dyeing, shaping, and retanning to achieve specific finishes or soften leather.

The fact that makes things more complicated is that there are many types of animal leather that can be used for leather - from ordinary cow or pig skin to rare, more exotic materials such as snake or crocodile skin.

One of the main challenges when tanning leather is that an error can damage the product (or at least may be difficult to repair). For example, if the wrong dye is applied, the leather needs to be bleached to remove the dye for re dyeing - this can affect the quality of the final topcoat by removing the natural markings on the leather.

A common issue that may affect leather products is the presence of leather - both in the air where leather and finished products are stored. How does moisture in the air or leather affect the quality and safety of leather products?

How to check the moisture content of leather

The quick way to check the moisture content of leather is to use a specialized leather moisture meter. These hygrometers use a pair of electrodes to penetrate a piece of leather and transmit current between the two electrodes. The resistance to this current is used to determine how much moisture is present in the leather. The wetter the leather, the less resistance it has.

By conducting rapid humidity checks on leather products throughout the entire tanning process, tanners can ensure that their products have an appropriate moisture content to maximize quality and prevent problems such as mold or bacterial growth during storage.

The process of using a leather hygrometer is simple: simply place the needle/electrode of the instrument into the leather and press the button. Once completed, the instrument will measure the moisture in the leather for the user, which can be recorded and used to determine whether the leather is too wet, too dry, or just right.
