Since night vision devices operate by using ambient night light in a passive working mode, they allow for good self-concealment. Night vision technology has evolved through three generations.

The first generation features cascade-type night vision devices (composed of three 0-generation phototubes connected in series).

The second generation uses microchannel plate night vision devices.

The third generation employs III-V semiconductor negative electron affinity photocathode image intensifier night vision devices.

During the transition from the second to the third generation, a super second-generation phototube, known as Gen 2+, was developed, with technical performance second only to third-generation products.In finer classification, night vision devices are divided into five levels: Gen 0, Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 2+, and Gen 3.

 

Today, night vision technology is relatively mature, offering good imaging quality and low cost. Therefore, they will remain one of the world's main night vision equipment for a considerable period of time.

Gen 2+ and Gen 3 products feature small size, light weight, clear images, complete functions, and high practicability. They are indispensable equipment for the military, police, armed police, customs, petroleum industry, news reporting, tourism, aquaculture, nature enthusiasts, and other fields requiring night operations.

 

However, since the core component - the low-light image intensifier - is a high-tech product with extremely complex manufacturing processes, its cost and price are relatively high. Still, the cost-performance ratio remains quite favorable.
