Five Precautions for Testing Circuit Short Circuits with a Multimeter
Before testing a circuit for short circuits with a multimeter, turn off the main power supply. Then use the 1Ω or 10Ω resistance range of the multimeter to measure the two wires of the same loop. A reading close to zero resistance indicates a short circuit.
1. Mechanical Zero Adjustment
Before measuring the circuit, perform mechanical zero adjustment on the multimeter. When no voltage or current is applied to the meter, the pointer of the multimeter should align with the zero-voltage or zero-current position.
2. Ensure Safety
When checking whether a circuit has a short circuit, do not touch the metal part of the multimeter test leads. This ensures both measurement accuracy and personal safety.
3. Do Not Switch Ranges During Measurement
It is forbidden to switch ranges while measuring an electrical quantity. This prohibition is especially critical when measuring high voltage or large current, to prevent damage to the multimeter.If you need to change ranges while testing for circuit short circuits, remove the test leads first, switch the range, and then resume measurement.
4. Keep the Meter Horizontally Placed

5. Set to the Maximum AC Voltage Range After Use
After finishing using the multimeter, turn the selector switch to the maximum AC voltage range. Never store the multimeter without adjusting the switch, otherwise it will affect the measurement accuracy in future use.If the multimeter will not be used for a long time, remove its internal battery to prevent electrolyte corrosion of internal components.
