The basic function of a multimeter is to measure resistance, voltage, and current. With the development of measuring instrument technology, the functions of multimeters are becoming increasingly powerful. For example, many multimeters have diode detection, transistor detection, capacitor detection functions, and some even have temperature detection functions (requiring specialized temperature monitoring probes). Even higher end multimeters can measure waveforms, equivalent to a simple oscilloscope.
Faced with a wide range of common and feature rich multimeters, when choosing, one often gets nitpicky. Sometimes, one may be greedy for too many functions and think that the more functions there are, the better. However, we should know that for electronic products, the more functions there are, the more complex the operation, the easier it is to damage, and most importantly, the more powerful the functions, the naturally higher the price.
2, Choose a multimeter based on the nature of the job
As we mentioned earlier, it is important to choose a multimeter based on actual needs. For functions that are rarely or infrequently used in our work, we can make appropriate choices. For example, for the diode measurement function, in many cases, we can measure its on/off state using the resistance mode. Therefore, when faced with two identical voltage, resistance, and current measurement functions, one of which has a diode measurement function and the other does not, we can choose the one without a diode measurement function.
3, Choose a multimeter based on price
When we choose a multimeter, we usually consider the price (except for the wealthy). The more functions there are, the higher the price, which is inevitable.
In addition, the higher the measurement accuracy, the higher the price will definitely be.
So we need to make choices according to our needs. If we have high requirements for measurement accuracy in our work, such as measuring uA level current as mentioned earlier, then we need to choose a multimeter with high measurement accuracy.
