In 1955, the American scientist G.H.Royer first successfully developed a transistor-to-DC converter that uses the saturation of the magnetic core to perform self-excited oscillation. Since then, various forms of DC converters using this technology have emerged, which have replaced the early use of rotating and mechanical oscillator commutation equipment with short life, poor reliability, and low conversion efficiency. Because the power transistor in the transistor DC converter works in the on-off state, the resulting regulated power supply has a large number of output groups, variable polarity, high efficiency, small size and light weight, so it was widely used at that time. Aerospace and military electronic equipment. Due to the backwardness of microelectronic equipment and technology at that time, transistors with high withstand voltage, high switching speed and high power could not be produced, so the DC converter in this period could only use low voltage input, and the conversion speed was not high. too high.

Since the 1960s, due to the rapid development of microelectronics technology, transistors with high reverse voltage have appeared. From then on, the DC converter can be directly rectified and filtered by the mains, and the power frequency transformer is no longer required to step down, thus greatly reducing the power consumption. Expanded its application range, and on this basis, a switching power supply without a power frequency step-down transformer was born. The power frequency transformer is omitted, and the volume and weight of the switching regulated power supply are greatly reduced, and the switching regulated power supply can truly achieve high efficiency, small size and light weight.

After the 1970s, the high-frequency and high-back-voltage power transistors, high-frequency capacitors, switching diodes, iron cores of switching transformers and other components related to this technology have also been continuously developed and produced, so that there is no power frequency transformer switching voltage regulator. The power supply has developed rapidly and is widely used in electronic computers, communications, aerospace, color TV and other fields, so that the power frequency transformer-free switching power supply has become the leader of various power supplies.
