How Non-contact Thermometers Ensure Measurement Accuracy

In order to prevent and control the epidemic, various regions have launched temperature monitoring for relevant personnel. Infrared forehead thermometers, infrared ear thermometers, and other common temperature monitoring devices. How should these devices be used correctly? Experts from the Ningbo Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ningbo Institute of Metrology and Testing provided answers to citizens.

The commonly used temperature measurement devices are mainly divided into contact and non-contact types, with the biggest difference being whether they come into contact with the skin of the person being measured. Currently, most of the non-contact thermometers used for epidemic prevention and control are non-contact thermometers. In terms of measurement accuracy, contact type is higher than non-contact type.

The normal body temperature of a person is approximately 36.3 to 37.2 degrees Celsius, and the temperature in different parts varies. The temperature in the rectum or ear drum is 0.3-0.6 degrees Celsius higher than that in the mouth, while the temperature in the armpit is 0.3-0.6 degrees Celsius lower. So why is there a situation of inaccurate temperature measurement? Firstly, air, dust, sweat, and obstructions can all have a certain impact on body temperature testing; Secondly, some thermometers have two functions: surface temperature and body temperature. Choosing the wrong mode can lead to inaccurate test results; Furthermore, in terms of equipment selection, it is not necessarily the more expensive the thermometer, the better. Even a few tens of yuan infrared ear thermometer can accurately measure when used correctly.

So, how can we ensure accurate temperature measurement? 20-30 minutes before measuring body temperature, avoid vigorous exercise, eating, drinking cold or hot water, do not apply hot or cold compresses, maintain emotional stability, and do not be nervous. If you suspect that the temperature is inaccurate, you can repeat the measurement a few more times; Regularly calibrate the thermometer and find significant data errors. It is recommended to discontinue use; At the entrance and exit of the highway, when waiting in line for temperature measurement, passengers in the car should open the windows at least five to ten minutes in advance to maintain thermal balance between the human body and the external environment before taking the measurement.
