How to choose an infrared thermometer correctly

Oct 05, 2022

Non-contact infrared temperature measurement products include portable, online and scanning three series, and have various optional accessories and corresponding computer software, each series has various models and specifications. Among various types of thermometers with different specifications, it is very important for users to choose the correct infrared thermometer model. Here are only the thinking steps on how to correctly choose the thermometer model for the buyer's reference.

The selection of infrared thermometers can be divided into three aspects:

Performance indicators, such as temperature range, spot size, working wavelength, measurement accuracy, response time, etc.; environment and working conditions, such as ambient temperature, window, display and output, protection accessories, etc.; other options, such as ease of use, maintenance And calibration performance and price, etc., also have a certain impact on the choice of thermometer. With the continuous development of technology, the latest design and new advances in infrared thermometers provide users with a variety of functional and multi-purpose instruments, expanding the choice.

Determine the temperature range:

The temperature measurement range is one of the most important performance indicators of the thermometer. Each model of thermometer has its own specific temperature range. Therefore, the user's measured temperature range must be considered accurate and comprehensive, neither too narrow nor too wide. According to the law of black body radiation, the change of radiant energy caused by temperature in the short waveband of the spectrum will exceed the change of radiant energy caused by the emissivity error.

To determine optical resolution (distance and sensitivity):

Optical resolution is determined by the ratio of D to S, which is the ratio of the distance D from the thermometer to the target to the diameter of the measurement spot, S. If the thermometer must be installed far away from the target due to environmental conditions, and small targets are to be measured, a thermometer with high optical resolution should be selected. The higher the optical resolution, i.e. the higher the D:S ratio, the higher the cost of the thermometer.

Simple to operate and easy to use:

Infrared thermometers should be intuitive, simple to operate, and easy to use by operators. Among them, a portable infrared thermometer is a small, lightweight, and portable temperature measurement instrument that integrates temperature measurement and display output. The display panel can display temperature and output various temperature information, and some can be operated by remote control or computer software program. In the case of harsh and complex environmental conditions, a system with separate temperature measuring head and display can be selected for easy installation and configuration. The signal output form that matches the current control equipment can be selected.

Calibration of infrared radiation thermometers:

Infrared thermometers must be calibrated to correctly display the temperature of the target being measured. If the used thermometer is out of tolerance in use, it needs to be returned to the manufacturer or repair center for re-calibration.
