How to compute a microscope's total magnification?

 

Perhaps some people may say that this is not a very simple problem, but in reality it is still a bit complicated.
First of all, let's give an example: when the magnification of the eyepiece of a stereomicroscope is 10 times, the zoom range of the variable magnification body is 0.7X-4.5X, and the additional objective lens is 2X, then its optical magnification is 10 times 0.7 times 2. The minimum magnification of this microscope is 14 times, and the maximum magnification is 10 times 4.5 times 2, which is equal to 90 times. Therefore, the total optical magnification of this stereomicroscope is 14 times to 90 times. Of course, this is only the actual magnification of the microscope mainframe. Next is the digital magnification of the microscope.

 

For example, if the size of the monitor is 17 inches and a 1/3 microscope camera is used, the digital magnification of the microscope camera as shown in the table below is 72 times. The formula for calculating the digital magnification of the microscope is: based on the configuration of the stereo microscope above, the variable magnification is 0.7X-4.5X, the additional objective is 2X, and the camera eyepiece is 1 (if the camera eyepiece has no magnification, it does not need to be included in the calculation). According to the formula: objective lens X camera eyepiece magnification X digital magnification, the minimum digital magnification is 0.7 times 2 times 1 times 72, which equals 100.8 times, and the maximum digital magnification is 4.5 times 2 times 1 times 72, which equals 648 times The digital magnification range is from 100.8 times to 648 times.

 

In this case, two formulas will appear:
1. Optical total magnification=eyepiece magnification X objective magnification
2. Digital total magnification=objective lens X camera eyepiece magnification X digital magnification
This formula is suitable for any microscope, whether it is a metallographic microscope, a biological microscope, etc.
