How to measure refractive index
The refractometer is designed based on the principle that liquids of different concentrations have different refractive indices. It can detect the content of globulin in colostrum, and has the advantages of fast, accurate, light weight, convenient operation and portability, clear field of view, and small volume.
A refractometer is an instrument that can detect the refractive index ND and average dispersion NF-NC of transparent, semi transparent liquids or solids. Due to the specific refractive index of different substances, this instrument can detect the characteristics of substances according to different states. Therefore, the detection results of refractometers are often used as a basis for detecting the concentration, purity, and identification of unknown samples of raw materials, solvents, intermediates, and end products. It has become one of the indispensable and commonly used equipment in scientific research institutions, especially in the pharmaceutical field with outstanding applications.
Usage:
Open the cover and wipe the inspection prism clean with a clean cloth;
Take 1-2 drops of the solution to be tested with a dropper and place them on the testing prism. Gently cover the cover plate, and if necessary, gently press the cover plate to evenly distribute the solution on the prism and avoid the generation of bubbles;
Hold the black rubber part of the instrument in hand, facing the bright spot, and try to keep the instrument parallel to the ground as much as possible (do not tilt up or fall down). Observe the scale inside through the eyepiece with your eyes. If it is unclear, slowly adjust the handwheel through the eyepiece until the scale can be clearly seen;
At this point, the blue white boundary inside the instrument can be clearly seen, and the scale value of the boundary is the concentration of the solution.
Precautions for refractometer:
This instrument is a precision Optical instrument. During use and maintenance, the following items should be noted:
During use, it is necessary to be careful and strictly follow the instructions. It is not allowed to loosen the connecting parts of the instrument, drop, collide, or experience severe vibration.
After use, it is strictly prohibited to directly put it into water for cleaning. A clean and soft cloth should be used to wipe it clean with water. The surface of optical components should not be scratched or scratched.
The instrument should be stored in a dry, dust-free, oil-free, and acid-free place to avoid corrosion or mold on optical components.
