How to measure the leakage current using a multimeter?

A multimeter can not only measure voltage but also detect electric leakage. There are two methods for measuring electric leakage: one is the resistance method, and the other is the voltage method. Whether using the resistance method or the voltage method, insert the red test lead into the VΩ hole of the multimeter and the black test lead into the COM hole of the multimeter.
How to measure whether an electrical device is leaking electricity using the resistance method? First, turn off the power supply of the electrical device. Use a multimeter and set the multimeter's range to the resistance buzzer range. Place one test lead of the multimeter on the outer shell of the electrical device, and place the other test lead on the live wire and the neutral wire respectively. If the multimeter makes a sound, it indicates that the electrical device has a serious leakage problem, and the location of the leakage must be checked. If the multimeter does not make a sound, gradually increase the resistance range of the multimeter step by step until the resistance value is measured. Generally, it is stipulated that if the resistance value is lower than 0.38 megohms, it means there is a leakage, and if it is higher than 0.38 megohms, there is no leakage.
When using the voltage method to measure the electric leakage of an electrical device, close the switch of the electrical device, and set the multimeter's range to the AC range of 700V (the range of each multimeter may be different, set it to the maximum current range). Place the red test lead of the multimeter on the outer shell of the electrical device and the black test lead on the neutral wire. If the multimeter displays a voltage value, it indicates that the electrical device is leaking electricity. If the voltage value displayed by the multimeter is zero, it means there is no leakage.
The voltage method for measuring electric leakage has certain limitations. It can only detect the leakage of the live wire and cannot detect the leakage of the neutral wire. If there are capacitor components in the electrical device, it will also affect the accuracy of the measurement by the voltage method. Therefore, the voltage method is not recommended.
