How to Select a High‑Quality Microscope

Ⅰ. Imaging Quality

Microscopes are mainly used to acquire microstructure images based on the principle of optical imaging for qualitative and quantitative image analysis. Hence, imaging quality is the core indicator. In the field of metallography, a clear image is called a crisp image. To obtain crisp images, four basic conditions must be satisfied: high contrast, high brightness, good color rendition and high resolution.

Nevertheless, contrast, brightness and color rendition are frequently overlooked during equipment selection. Simply pursuing high resolution blindly may lead to improper selection. For instance, a large domestic steel plant purchased a microscope of a Japanese brand in 2000. Its imaging quality was far inferior to that of the German Zeiss microscope bought in 1985, even though the objective lens had a higher numerical aperture. The reason is simple: the manufacturer only considered resolution, one factor affecting imaging quality, while ignoring other critical factors such as contrast, brightness and color rendition.

Zeiss in Germany excels in this regard. Its ICCS optical system and advanced anti-glare technology greatly improve image contrast, brightness and color rendition, delivering fine microstructural details and smooth, natural colors, which is a prerequisite for accurate image analysis.

Ⅱ. Mechanical Stability

Good imaging quality alone is not sufficient; the microscope should consistently maintain high performance over time. This property is referred to as "mechanical stability". A microscope is not a low-cost consumable item, and its normal service life can exceed 30 years. Buyers are suggested to focus on the following four aspects: ① Raw materials ② Manufacturing precision ③ Mechanical design ④ Place of origin (many foreign microscope manufacturers have set up joint venture factories in China)

When comparing the above indicators, users who have the conditions are recommended to bring their own samples for on-site evaluation. Comparison enables effective discrimination. In conclusion, choosing an excellent microscope is not merely purchasing a high-quality product, but also a far-sighted investment.
