How to Use an Anemometer to Measure Airflow
Cup anemometer
It is the anemometer that is used most frequently. Robinson initially created the rotating cup anemometer in England. Four cups were available at the time, but only three were actually used. The wind cup is attached on a shaft that can freely spin, as are the three empty parabolic or hemispherical cups that are fixed to the frame along one side. The wind cup revolves around its axis in response to the wind force, and the rotational speed is proportional to the wind speed. Electrical contacts, tachogenerators, or photoelectric counters can all be used to measure speed.
propeller anemometer
It is an anemometer with several propellers, each with three or four blades, that revolve around a horizontal axis. The propeller is fixed to the front of a wind vane such that it rotates with its rotation plane always facing the anemometer's wind direction and rotates at a rate proportional to the wind speed.
