Introduction to Soldering Iron Resistance Test

Electric soldering iron is an essential tool for electronic production and electrical maintenance, mainly used for soldering components and wires. It can be divided into internal heating electric soldering iron and external heating electric soldering iron according to mechanical structure, non suction soldering iron and suction soldering iron according to function, and high-power electric soldering iron and low-power electric soldering iron according to different purposes.

The electric soldering iron test includes three parts: ground resistance test (cold/hot state), leakage voltage test, and leakage current test.

1. Ground resistance test of electric soldering iron in cooling state:
In the absence of power, connect one end of the multimeter probe to the ground terminal of the power plug and the other end to the tip of the soldering iron to test the data;

2. Grounding resistance test of electric soldering iron in heating state:
Plug in the power, turn on the soldering iron, and connect one end of the multimeter probe to the grounding terminal of the socket, and the other end to the test board that is in contact with the soldering iron. Measure the results;

3. The leakage voltage test and leakage current test of electric soldering iron are similar to the resistance test method. It should be noted that the multimeter needs to switch gears or adjust the position of the multimeter probe wire when measuring current.

Internal heating electric soldering iron
Composed of a handle, connecting rod, spring clip, soldering iron core, and soldering iron tip. Due to the fact that the soldering iron core is installed inside the soldering iron tip, it heats up quickly and has a high heat utilization rate, hence it is called an internal heating soldering iron.

The commonly used specifications for internal heating soldering irons are 20W and 50W. Due to its high thermal efficiency, A 20W internal heating soldering iron is equivalent to an external heating soldering iron of around 40W.

The rear end of the internal heating electric soldering iron is hollow, used for fitting onto the connecting rod and fixed with a spring clip. When replacing the soldering iron tip, the spring clip must be removed first, and the front end of the soldering iron tip must be clamped with pliers and slowly pulled out. Remember not to apply too much force to avoid damaging the connecting rod.

The core of an internal heating electric soldering iron is made by winding a relatively thin nickel chromium resistance wire around a ceramic tube, with a resistance of about 2.5k Ω (20W), and the temperature of the soldering iron can generally reach around 350OC.
