1. Ranging precision has gradually increased from the initial meter level to the decimeter level and centimeter level. The world's most modern stations currently have ranging precision that can go as low as a millimeter.


2. In terms of range, the maximum distance has been expanded from the initial 1000–2000 km to 20,000 km or even 36,000 km. The capability of ranging has increased to 380,000 km with the implementation of laser moon measuring.


3. Higher frequency laser ranging, such as 10kHz ranging, is also being tested, with the current range frequency being between 1000 and 2000 times per second, up from the initial one per second.


4. Monochromatic ranging systems are still often utilized nowadays in terms of ranging wavelength, and some stations are also utilizing the two-color/multi-color laser ranging systems. Only the measurement findings themselves may rectify the atmospheric delay in the dual-wavelength laser ranging system, improving data accuracy. The system no longer requires the correction of atmospheric physical parameters and atmospheric models.
