Multimeter - Capacitance Ranging Tips

reasons to use a multimeter to measure capacitance

Compared to resistors, capacitors in the circuit have a substantially greater failure rate, and there are numerous different forms of failures, making their identification challenging.

What instrument should be used by the multimeter to measure capacitance?

The correct range should be chosen based on the estimated dimensions of the capacitance that was measured:

000p file, suited for capacitance measurements below 2000pF;

ideal for measuring capacitance between 2000pF and 20nF is the 20n range;

ideal for measuring capacitance between 20nF and 200nF is the 200n range;

appropriate for measuring capacitance between 200nF and 2F, is in the 2 range;

Suitable for measuring capacitance between 2F and 20F, the 20 range.

How to Measure Capacitance with Pointer Multimeter

Connect the black test lead to the capacitor's positive pole and the red test lead to the negative pole while setting the pointer multimeter to the Rx1k or Rx100 range. The pointer indicates that the capacitance is typical if it swiftly moves to the right before slowly returning to a position close to infinity (). The pointer shows the measured capacitor's leakage resistance value; if the return value is less than infinity, the capacitor has a large leakage current and cannot be used; the leakage resistance of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor must be greater than 200k;the capacitor has been unplugged or the electrolyte has dried out and lost capacity if the pointer does not swing in any way to the right; The capacitor has failed if the pointer swings erratically and stays close to 0, then stops.

Precautions for Using a Multimeter to Measure Capacitance

The electricity must be turned off and discharged prior to the measurement. Finding a metal object, such as a screwdriver, holding the exposed part of the metal on the insulating handle, and catching the two feet of the measured capacitor are the steps in the discharge procedure. Utilize a digital multimeter to measure the capacitance. Once the capacitor has been discharged, locate the capacitor block, insert its two pins into the capacitance measurement socket, and wait for the LCD screen's fluctuating reading to stabilize. The side capacitor's capacity represents the true value. You can utilize the resistance of the pointer multimeter to measure leakage.When measuring, the RX1K or RX100 can be used with the small-capacity multimeter. The pointer will deflect clockwise, indicating that the capacitor is completely charged, when the two test leads are attached to the two feet of the capacitor and the display on the dial is being measured.The hands will rotate counterclockwise to infinity when the current is flowing. The capacity increases as the hands' angle increases. The hands must swing continuously during the deflection process in order for them to return to infinity. This initially suggests that there are no leaks in the capacitor.a spot where the needle abruptly slows down or stops moving again, signaling a leak in a specific area of the capacitor. The absence of leaking is indicated if the final display is limitless. Alternately, you may look at the characteristics on an oscilloscope, which is not feasible for regular people. A capacitor with a withstand voltage value is also present. The electrolytic capacitor often has the withstand voltage value inscribed on it. When choosing, it's important to pay attention to ceramic capacitors that lack top markings.
