Non-Contact Voltage Detection with a Multimeter

The Fluke 117DMM also includes a built-in non-contact voltage detector. All rights reserved by Control Engineering Network, VoltAlert ™. It is located above the LCD display screen of the instrument panel, and the sensing circuit can detect the presence of AC voltage and make a sound, causing the LED indicator light located in the center position above the LCD display screen to emit red light. For AC voltage detection, this detector can provide two sensitivity settings. Among them, the "Lo" (low) setting is used to measure embedded wall sockets, terminal blocks, embedded industrial sockets, and various wires. Hi "(high) sensitivity setting allows

Detect the voltage of other hidden power connectors or sockets, whose AC voltage is generally hidden inside the connector itself. Under the "Hi" setting, VoltAlert ™ Can detect whether bare wires with voltages as low as 4V are charged. This feature allows technicians to quickly determine whether the panel, control cabinet, or equipment has been reliably grounded. If AC voltage is detected, the troubleshooting personnel can then use Auto-V/LoZ to determine whether the detected voltage is a stray voltage or a hard voltage, and then start working.

Before conducting contact measurements, first use a non-contact voltage detector to check for the presence of voltage, which can provide an additional protective barrier for the measurement.
