Safe distance of electromagnetic radiation
Experts say that any electrical appliance can generate electromagnetic radiation as long as a current is applied, ranging from air conditioners, televisions, computers, microwaves, humidifiers, to hair dryers, mobile phones, chargers, and even wiring boards. However, the amount of radiation generated by various appliances varies.
After searching for the specific radiation levels, the reporter did not find any standard tables for different electrical radiation levels in China. However, the SAPIO magazine published in Japan has released a set of electromagnetic radiation detection data for commonly used household appliances (see table).
Although radiation is everywhere, Zhao Yufeng, the director of the Expert Committee of the China Indoor Environment Monitoring Committee, pointed out that not all electromagnetic radiation can harm the human body. If the magnetic field intensity is controlled within the specified range, it has a positive and beneficial effect on the human body. For example, physical therapy machines sold on the market use the warm effect of electromagnetic radiation to eliminate inflammation and treat diseases. Therefore, the key issue is to control electromagnetic radiation within a safe range.
If consumers want to know the radiation level in their environment, they can use instrument detection methods. But currently, domestically produced testers priced at a few hundred yuan may have deviations in measurement data, while some imported testers cost hundreds of thousands of yuan, which is difficult for ordinary people to accept.
Zhao Yufeng said that a simple monitoring method can be used to help people understand the safe distance of electrical appliances: using a radio that can receive AM (amplitude modulation) channels, turning on the channel and adjusting it to a place without broadcasting, and approaching the household appliances such as the TV, refrigerator, microwave, or computer to be measured, the noise emitted by the radio will suddenly increase. After walking a certain distance, the original smaller noise level will be restored; In this way, the safe distance can be measured, and it is sufficient to maintain the measured safe distance from this appliance in daily life.
