Seven-step details to create a long-lasting soldering iron head

Detail 1 Soldering iron tip selection
A It is very important to choose the correct size and shape of the soldering iron tip. Choosing the right soldering iron tip can make the work more efficient and increase the durability of the soldering iron tip and the life of the soldering iron tip. Choosing the wrong soldering iron tip will affect the soldering iron's inability to exert its maximum efficiency, which will reduce the soldering quality and increase the production cost.
Why is it important to choose the correct tip size and shape? Because the size of the soldering iron tip is directly related to the heat capacity, the larger the soldering iron tip, the larger the heat capacity, and the smaller the soldering iron tip, the smaller the heat capacity. When performing continuous soldering, use a larger tip for less temperature drop. In addition, because the heat capacity of the large soldering iron tip is high, a relatively low temperature can be used during soldering, and the soldering iron tip is not easy to oxidize, which increases its life. Generally speaking, the size of the soldering iron tip is based on not affecting adjacent components. Choosing a geometry that allows adequate contact with the solder joint can improve soldering efficiency.

Detail 2 Control the temperature of the soldering iron tip
B During the soldering process, low temperature welding should be used as much as possible. High temperature will accelerate the oxidation of the soldering iron tip and reduce the life of the soldering iron tip. If the temperature of the soldering iron tip exceeds 470°C, it will oxidize twice as fast as when the soldering iron tip is used at 380°C.

a): Repair lead-free SMD components
1) To repair ordinary components such as 0603, 0805, 3216 components, the range of iron temperature: 350℃±50℃.

2) To repair IC, the temperature range of soldering iron is 350℃±50℃:

3) For repairing components containing metal materials or materials with large contact area and fast heat dissipation, the temperature range of electric soldering iron: 380°C±50°C.

b): Maintenance of lead-free THD components

1) Repair ordinary components such as 1/4W.1/2W resistors, small triodes, capacitors with low voltage in small capacity, ICs, diodes and other small components. The range of iron temperature: 340°C±50°C.

2) Repair components containing metal materials such as radiators, electrolytic capacitors with high internal pressure and large capacity, high-voltage diodes, fire cows and other large materials. The temperature range of the soldering iron: 380°C±50°C.

3) To repair the connecting wire with plastic skin, the temperature range of soldering iron: 350℃±50℃.

Detail 3 The strength of the soldering iron tip during the soldering process
Especially when novices are soldering, they will apply too much pressure, which will damage and deform the soldering iron tip, because the general temperature of the soldering iron tip is above 350 degrees during soldering, and some large parts will be higher. It is not very hard at high temperature, so its shape is easy to change. Generally, the force we use is as long as the tip of the soldering iron can fully contact the solder joint, and the heat can be transferred.

Detail 4 Always keep the soldering iron tip tinned when the soldering iron tip is not in use
This can reduce the chance of oxidation of the soldering iron tip, making the soldering iron tip more durable and longer. After use, the temperature of the soldering iron tip should be slightly lowered before adding new solder, generally 250 degrees, so that the tin plating layer has a better anti-oxidation effect. This job is simple but important, and often underestimated.

Details 5 Conservation
If you find black oxide on the tip of the soldering iron, it means that the tip of the soldering iron is oxidized and may not be tinned, and it must be cleaned up immediately. When cleaning, first adjust the temperature of the soldering iron tip to about 250°C, then wait a while, then the temperature of the soldering iron tip really cools down, then clean the soldering iron tip with a cleaning sponge, and finally apply tin. Repeat the action until the oxide is cleaned up. Therefore, we must pay attention to tinning the tip of the soldering iron when it is not in use. It will be annoying for the operator to clean it all the time. More importantly, the life of the tip of the soldering iron will also be affected.
Note: Be sure to pay attention to the tools you choose to clean when cleaning: do not use sandpaper or hard objects to clean the tip of the soldering iron.

Detail 6 To apply the appropriate flux
Fluxes with high activity or strong corrosiveness will accelerate the corrosion of the soldering iron tip when heated, so low-corrosivity fluxes should be selected, which will not only help protect the life of the soldering iron tip and increase the tolerance of the soldering iron tip, but also help Save the cost of welding products and improve the welding effect.

Detail 7 Put the welding iron on the welding frame after welding
When not using a soldering iron, the soldering iron should be carefully placed on a suitable soldering iron stand to prevent the soldering iron tip from being damaged by collision.
