Gas detectors are one of the most commonly used detection instruments in industrial production, which can detect the concentration of toxic and harmful substances in our work. Gas detectors can detect the types of gases present in the environment and use corresponding safety protection equipment based on their detection results. The core component of a gas detector is a gas sensor, which can detect parameters such as gas concentration, temperature and humidity, and convert the gas concentration signal into an electrical signal. Then display the concentration information through the display device. In addition to sensors, gas detectors also have detection motherboards, power supply devices, alarm devices, sampling devices, display devices, etc. Each part is important and indispensable.


As the core component of the gas detector, the gas sensor has different detection principles according to the type of gas to be measured, detection accuracy and measurement range. The common types in the market are catalytic combustion gas sensor, electrochemical gas sensor, thermal conductivity gas sensor, infrared gas sensor, PID photoion sensor, etc.


The most commonly used sensor for detecting combustible gases is the catalytic combustion type, which has the characteristics of good output signal linearity, low cost, and no cross interference from other gases. Based on the Wheatstone bridge principle, the measured gas can undergo flameless combustion with the induction resistor. High temperature changes the resistance value of the induction resistor, breaking the balance of the bridge and outputting a stable current signal.


The commonly used sensor for detecting toxic gases is electrochemical type, which has the advantages of stable performance, low power consumption, good accuracy, and not being contaminated by other gases. It can detect most toxic and harmful gases. This type of sensor can react with the measured gas and generate an electrical signal proportional to the gas concentration.


Infrared gas sensors utilize the selective absorption properties of different gases in the near-infrared spectrum, and the relationship between gas concentration and absorption intensity to determine gas concentration. They have a series of advantages such as long lifespan, higher sensitivity, better stability, and convenient maintenance.


The PID ion type gas sensor uses a UV lamp light source to ionize the gas into positive and negative ions that can be detected by the detector, and then converts the detected charge into a current signal. The current is amplified and converted into the concentration value of the gas through the corresponding algorithm. This type of gas sensor has high accuracy, can detect ppb levels, has good stability, is non-destructive to gases, and has a fast response speed. It is commonly used in detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but its price is also relatively high.
