The production process of polarizing microscope light sheets

When observing with a polarizing microscope, the sample must be made into a qualified polished sheet, which is referred to as a light sheet. The production process is as follows:
(1) Sample selection: Select representative sample parts according to the purpose of observation and analysis requirements, cut into 10×10×10mm sample blocks, and clean them.
(2) Mounting or glue penetration: Some samples with smaller sizes need to be mounted; samples with loose or more pores should be glued first.
(3) Coarse grinding: Select the flatter side of the sample, place it on a grinder and use coarse sand to smooth the surface to tidy up the appearance and remove edges and corners.
(4) Fine grinding: Grind with fine sand until all traces left by rough grinding are eliminated.
(5) Fine grinding: Grind with finer fine sand until the surface is flat, place it in a bright place and observe that the reflection is faintly visible.
(6) Polishing: Place the sample on the polishing machine, add abrasive paste (polishing powder) and polish until the surface of the sample is bright and there are no obvious scratches under a reflective microscope.
(7) Marking: The ground specimens should be numbered and labeled to clarify the source and name.
(8) Erosion: Select the appropriate erosion method and erosion conditions according to the purpose of observation and analysis requirements, and erode the sample.
When it is necessary to conduct microstructural analysis under transmitted light and reflected light at the same time, the sample is made into optical thin sections or even ultra-optical thin sections (<0.02mm). When preparing optical thin sections, first grind the sample into a thin section with a thickness of 0.03mm without adding a cover glass, and then polish the surface of the finely ground section on a polishing machine.
